I am currently a Head of Modern Languages in a large secondary school in the North East Of England. I also work with the local University with PGCE MFL students, an area of my work I thoroughly enjoy. I am passionate about teaching and learning, and have a particular interest in the teaching of grammar and of literary texts to develop reading, writing and listening skills. I am currently working on developing a range of resources to support the study of Le Petit Nicolas and the series of books.

Fun with French words. Creative ideas for listening, speaking and writing. Primary and Secondary

On this presentation, you will find ideas to help your students move on from using single words to building sentences. You can adapt the slides to suit. There are ideas to help identifying differences with j'ai/ j'aime and more in sentences to support listening. You can use Slides 1 and 2 to train your students to pronounnce cognates accurately, then develop and set sentence challenges with mini whiteboards or in pairs. Simple, but effective, tried and tested in both primary and secondary activities.

Gap fill and error correcting : verbs in the present and reflexive verbs French grammar practice.

This activity is designed to help students to develop their expertise in using the verbs to have and to be in French with correct forms, and to memorise and practise using correct pronouns for difficult reflexive verbs. the red is to support students to find the errors and the green indicates the subject so students can be encouraged to use these as a clue for both the verb formation and the gap fill for the work on reflexive verbs. There should be a fine balance between challenge and support for all abilities in this activity but feedback and comments are more than welcome.

I tried to select a nice topic and theme to teach and revise various skills and grammatical aspects . It links to Expo3 ( la Normandie ) rouge with the discovery of an area but I jaust added more on this so students get to compare areas and see how varied France is. I will add more through a different power point and add worksheets , this is taking ages .... hope it helps. I used the interactive quiz with the gap fill as a little starter and introduction about the Alps before showing the Power Point.

Un groupe de musiciens. Year 7. Developing reading and translation skills.

I have designed this to support my year 7 in developing reading/ writing / translating skills. I started with the text ( pair work competition : each pupil has a different colour pen, the first to circle the translation in French in the text wins the point and it is quite visual at the end who is fastest . Great fro competition The other activities involve finding translations, matching up for lower ability and extending sentences from the given text. The last slide on the Power Point contains a writing list of bullet points ( goes with Studio 1 ’ il est hypercool’ but can be adapted for other courses. I owe Rachel Hawkes a big thank you for inspiring the Power Point slides offering differentiation when sentence building on mini whiteboards. I hope it is useful.

Here you will find examples of some of my favourite starters that I use with all the year groups I teach. Once down loaded, you may just adapt these to your topics. They have proved effective and also once you have the idea and the template, you get minimum preparation for maximised learning and consolidation. Feedback appreciated as always. Thank you

Please follow the link on youtube ( pink martini ou est ma tete official video ) Lovely song for the past tense, parts of the body and even the direct object pronoun. The cards are for pupils to show as they hear the matching idea in the song. I have now added the audio file, I hope it works

There are many ways to use this and I have explained on the worksheet. Students could dictate the text to each other to focus on spellings, then could mime and memorise ( talk for learning ) , translate and change the time frame of the text. Any feedback appreciated.

The text is directly taken from the brilliant website les petits citoyens and I made a power point activity with suggested activities to exploit this text from this authentic French online magazine. The last two slides can support in generating a debate on the advantages and disadvantages of Smartphones. U

A presentation to help students develop their reading skills and vocabulary on this sensitive issue. Can lead to interesting debates and be used cross-curricular. The text is from lepetitcitoyen.fr website which I strongly recommend.

Just designed this for grade 10 but could be adapted for any year group , any age, the reconstruction of the song can be differentiated as I made it harder for most able candidates by cutting more bits of the song, whereas I did leave bigger blocks for less able candidates.
